The dream team is here…

As most of you will undoubtedly know by now (the blogosphere is at its best today…):

Blue Wave Technology Limited have acquired BE Systems Limited. Blog entry from Paul Mooney here.

To meet the demand for top quality IBM Lotus Notes consultancy throughout Ireland, UK and Europe, Blue Wave Technology Limited has acquired BE Systems Limited, Specialists in providing top quality IBM Lotus technology services and support throughout the UK.

However, I wanted to just say a couple of things on the matter:

I couldn’t be happier on a personal level for Paul, Warren and Kitty. They are all great folks, some of the kindest and most helpful that I have met in this industry.  I am sure it will be a good deal and a good business decision for all concerned.

More importantly though… Even as a keen competitor to BlueWave and BE in the UK market, I also think this is great event for Lotus in the UK. For Lotus to become a dominant player in the UK collaboration marketplace again we must have a vibrant, energetic, competitive and driven partner community.  Changes and acquisitions are neccessary to enhance and improve this business and we must embrace these changes.  No one partner can answer all the questions our customers ask of us, and so it is essential that we work together, are aware of where one anothers’ strengths lie and continue to push forward with both our own development and also the building of strong relationships with one another.

We are in exciting times, and this is another great sign that the Lotus partner community really is the place to be…

I am…

This has just come to mind as my darling other half loaned my CULT 2007 Lotusphere shirt (featuring the I AM logo) to my daughter for doing craft in last week:

Image:I am... (she’s making a King Tut mask by the way!)

Anyway, the point of the post?  This still has to be the best Lotus ad ever – so simple, powerful and easy to understand, transcending the technology divide.  I think of it as the iPod silouette ad of its day:

Superb…

Sniff sniff… My Macbook Pro is for sale…

Update – It has sold already… sob!

Long story, but I’ve come to the decision that my Macbook Pro must go on to pastures new…

It’s a 15.4″ Core2Duo 2.16GHz with 2GB of RAM and in really good condition, and is just 10 months old (so it’s still in warranty and can have Applecare applied).  It’s got Leopard, iLife08 and iWork08 installed plus a load of other software such as VMWare Fusion and Parallels (and of course Notes and Sametime 😉 ).

I’m looking to get offers in the region of

Clear your desktops…

… for Lotus Notes 8!

With a little bit of work (adding what we’re clearing the desktop for might be good!), these could prove to be really good viral marketing for ND8.

The Lotus Notes 8 site has received a makover too – well worth a look:

New Media Douchebags – in plain English

How true is this?!?

I would comment on the video, but I’m far too busy – I’ve got to post a link on Facebook, tweet about it on Twitter, bookmark it on del.icio.us and Dogear…

Other announcements of note – Commonstore and Workplace Collaborative Learning

It’s been a big day at IBM SWG, with a whole raft of announcements including the aforementioned Sametime 8.0, plus the following:

New in CommonStore for Lotus Domino, V8.4 and CommonStore for Exchange Server, V8.4 customers:

IBM Workplace Collaborative Learning builds on core Lotus Learning Management System capabilities
IBM Workplace Collaborative Learning (WCL) 2.7 is a portal-based learning management system that provides learning services to help organizations manage their training programs more efficiently and integrates learning resources on the desktop. Integration with Workplace Collaborative Learning delivers blended learning experiences and provides students with enhanced tools such as course discussion areas, document sharing, Web conferencing, and chat rooms.

What’s new in IBM Workplace Collaborative Learning 2.7

  • IBM Workplace Collaborative Learning 2.7 addresses various customer requests to further enhance the user interface (UI), usability, stability, and reliability of the application. A few feature enhancements are also available such as:
  • Administrative and student UI refresh
  • Usability enhancements to core administrative areas such as course management and results
  • Integration with IBM Lotus Sametime 7.5 for instant messaging and Web conferences
  • Integration with IBM Lotus Quickr for course collaboration capabilities
  • Support for multiple content servers to house content near users for enhanced performance
  • Capability to add critical learning information such as course, users, results, masters, and offering in bulk.

Great news that Commonstore is already supporting Domino 8 and Exchange 2007, as well as the new installation and search enhancements.  Also, the new features in WCL sounds really useful, particularly the integration with Quickr and Sametime.  I’m surprised that IBM has kept the “Workplace” moniker though…

Image:Sametime 8 announced today

Sametime 8 announced today

Exciting news, Sametime 8 has been announced today, in three of its four flavours:

IBM Lotus Sametime Standard 8.0 and IBM Lotus Sametime Enterprise Meeting Server 8.0 deliver continued enhancements

IBM Lotus Sametime Entry software delivers core enterprise instant messaging capabilities at an affordable price

I assume that Advanced will follow along at a later date.

The Sametime product pages have had a refresh too, as you might expect, with a cool new “Get the Buzz” page:

Image:Sametime 8 announced today
I like the way the different levels have been split out, as I think this will make sense for a lot of SMBs.  However, as I’ve pointed out elsewhere, I do think the Entry/Standard/Advanced tags are a huge retrograde step – so 2004 (well apart from Vista of course)…

Adam Gartenberg has a very nice summary of the new features and the announcement details on his blog.

IBM DVD Advertising – truth stranger than fiction?

This cannot be true, surely IBM wouldn’t be this stupid?

IBM hopes to slip commercials onto your DVDs. Big Blue has asked the US Patent Office for the exclusive rights to a “system and method of providing advertisements during DVD playback.”

If this thing ever shows up in your DVD player, your discs won’t be ad-free – unless you shell out some cash for some sort of digital certificate.

“Whenever a DVD is to be played, a certificate is consulted to determine whether the content of the DVD should be played with or without commercial interruptions,” the patent reads. “If the certificates provide for commercial interruptions, then commercials can be obtained from an online service that renders commercials on demand, or from the DVD itself.”

And, yes, those commercials would be littered throughout the DVD – television-style.

Big Blue argues that DVDs “may be a great source of advertising revenues that are not being tapped” and that “revenues from DVD advertising may contribute to the reduction in cost of the DVDs”. Presumably, an ad-laden DVD would cost less than the discs of today.

Considering that DVR-wielding consumers have already revolted against television ads, we can’t see the public embracing this DVD bastardizing technology. But we wouldn’t be surprised if IBM and big-name movie studios tried to force it down your throat.

Of course, the whole notion might be completely irrelevant. Even without ads in place, the future of the DVD isn’t exactly bright.

Idea Jam officially launched

Bruce and the team at Elguji Software have officially launched the Idea Jam site:

With over 450 ideas submitted, 1,400 comments and 9,000 votes cast, Idea Jam has been taken out of beta and is now available to the IBM Lotus Community. While the current Idea Jam site is geared towards Lotus developers there are plans to make a site available specifically for Notes “end users.” IBM and other companies are also currently piloting Idea Jam based sites and the momentum is building for the Elguji Ideas development team to make the product commerically available sooner rather than later.

Personally, I am very impressed with the community and the dialogs that are taking place on Idea Jam. Site traffic is approaching half that of OpenNTF.org and RSS subscriptions are going through the roof. Many IBM’ers have also signed up and are participating in Idea Jam and even more are watching from the side lines.

I am confident that Idea Jam will in fact help drive inovation not only in Lotus’s product line but, other companies who employ the “Elguji Ideas” product for their customers.

A big thanks to Matt White, Sean Burgess, Kelly Callahan, Mark Barton and Gayle for all of their help and support. Special thanks to Mary Beth Raven, Adam Gartenberg, Chris Reckling and Alan Lepofsky for their support of Idea Jam.

Here is the Press Release that we are releasing later today.

I am convinced that both the site and the product are set for a wildly successful future.  Well done to all concerned…

Death by Powerpoint…

Well worth reviewing (and passing to anyone else in your organisation that builds presentations)…  Ditch those bullets and make those Monday morning meetings that bit more bearable!

Chokers!

The Telegraph yesterday had a headline of “Unqualified Failure” above a photo of Steve McClaren, which whilst harsh, seemed to be an accurate representation of what had gone on the previous night.  I still can’t believe it, quite frankly.

So that got me thinking… What on earth has happened to the English team this last year or so?

Well there were certainly some early hiccups in the qualifying campaign – a defeat to Croatia, a draw with Macedonia. However, when it came down to it, what England needed from the last two games was one point, yes just one measley little draw from two games against Russia and Croatia.  Having won the previous five games against varying opposition all by the score 3-0, and having conceded only 2 goals in the entire 10 qualifying games thus far, that didn’t appear to be too much to ask.  Keep it tight at the back and nick the odd goal or two here and there and we’d be fine.

The reality, two shocking performances (particularly against Croatia on Wednesday), sloppy defending, ill-judged tactics, lack of control and responsibility from the senior players and a complete absence of any sense of a game plan.  Now we can blame this on the manager, Steve McClaren, the players or indeed the FA, but what I see it coming down to is that we bottled it. We choked. The team saw the finishing line approaching and, for whatever reason, could not summon the emotional intelligence to develop and action a plan to get over it.

Now that is bad enough, but I think we’ve already seen this once or twice this year from the English sports psyche…

Look at Lewis Hamilton and McLaren.  15 races gone this season, the most amazing debut season of any driver in history, and Lewis is in pole position (sorry) in the championship, a handful of points ahead of his teammate Alonso and 17 points ahead of Raikonnen. He and McLaren just need to develop a well-judged gameplan in the rain in the penultimate race to nudge him over that finishing line.  Take it easy, stay in contention, take no risks, and he’ll be there.  After all, his season has been about consistency – only 3 race wins, but loads of 2nd and 3rd places.  So, what happens, Lewis and the team see glory ahead, chase the race win in those dreadful conditions. His tyres get worn down to ridiculous levels, Lewis takes it too fast into the pits, and the gravel trap beckons…

To a lesser extent you could argue the same of the English rugby team… Amazingly they make it to the Rugby World Cup final, and all credit to them for acheiving that.  But did we really give of our best in that game?  Did we have every eventuality planned for, did we know the opposition well enough, did we truly have the belief that we would win?  If it was the Italians in the football they would, if it was Lance Armstrong in the TdeF he would have, if it was Roger Federer in the tennis, and so on…

So, I think there’s a theme running through…  Have we become a nation of sporting chokers?

Why I think Lotus is truly back in town…

These are Nathan‘s words (he is so much more eloquent than I), but I echo them wholeheartedly:

[Thank you to] My benefactors, IBM Lotus software, who I believe finally truly GET IT.  They’ve pointed the shotgun someplace other than their foot at last.  Even the parts that I think aren’t good enough or done enough are still, honestly, brilliant.  They’ve gotten serious about listening to partners and customers again for the first time in a decade, and as marvelous as 2007 has been for Lotus and IBM, 2008 is going to be even better.  Creating a renaissance in Notes was considered impossible.  You’ve done the impossible and that makes you mighty.  Remember how you did it — listen, code, ship — and the competition will never touch you.  Thank you, IBM Lotus Software.

Oh, and “Happy Thanksgiving” to all those the other side of the pond…

Image:Don’t Give Up On Vista!

Don’t Give Up On Vista!

This is classic marketing stuff…

Go to CNet’s Windows Vista page, and what do you see in pride of place on the page?
Image:Don’t Give Up On Vista!

Yup, a great big banner ad stating proudly “Don’t Give Up On Vista”! Click the ad, and where, oh where does it go?

Image:Don’t Give Up On Vista!
That’s right, straight to the Apple Mac OS X landing page. How sweet is that!   Even better, there’s a delightful TV ad to go with it too…

(I’ll choose to ignore the dig at Lotus Symphony in the background of the video for now…)

Twittering Lotusphere!

What an awesome idea, Chris has created a Twitter channel for Lotusphere08:

In order to foster faster communication with everyone at Lotusphere, or even if you just wish to sit back and watch, there will be a Lotusphere channel you can follow and post to.  Twitter is setting it up so if you set yourself to follow all the tweets, you can also post to it so everyone gets them.  Talk about instant communication when not everyone can be on Sametime and there is breaking news, a vendor giving away cool stuff, when you want to find people or when a vendor has an open party.  The possibilities are endless.  I talked to some Loti in and around the social networking area to see if they had anything built for this, the immediate answer was they didn’t think so.

http://twitter.com/lotusphere

everyone should set Twitter to FOLLOW. You can follow any profile on Twitter by sending follow+username.  For example, people would send:

follow Lotusphere

to Twitter from IM or phone.  People can also go right to the profile page, where you can click the  “follow” button located under the profile name.

This will be a great way for all the attendees (and those that don’t make it to Orlando) to follow the news, gossip and trends from the best tradeshow out there.  Join twitter now, and subscribe to follow the #Lotusphere channel today.  Follow me too!

Image:Idea Jam is out of beta!

Idea Jam is out of beta!

Bruce tells us that Idea Jam has gone Gold!

Today Idea Jam came out of beta testing and is now available for all in the IBM Lotus Community. The press release will hit the wires early next week.

Image:Idea Jam is out of beta!

Many thanks again to Matt, Sean, Kelly and Gayle for their hard work and dedication to making Idea Jam go from an idea to a product in only a few months. Mark Barton’s graphs will be showing up on Idea Jam very soon. A big thank you to the Lotus ISV’s, Business Partners and Organizations who have inquired about purchasing the Idea Jam for use in their environment. We are still on target to make Idea Jam available for purchase during the first quarter of 2008.

The Idea Jam is proving to be such a great tool for all of us in the Lotus community, and will also be a really awesome product when it gets packages up and sold during 1Q08.  I know that we will be using it with Morpheus, and I am sure that many other similar companies, big and small, will find it to be the answer to their prayers for collating, discussing and evaluating ideas.   At first I was think this was a very focused application, devoted to product features, but the more I consider it the more I can see it being used in all areas of an organisation – ideas for policies, procedures, marketing plans, advertising, value propositions, SLA improvements – the list goes on.

And all this from a Domino Application, a great looking Domino application.  Bruce, Matt, Sean and the others should be very very proud….

DominoKeys: An open letter to Mike Rhodin…

Some very valid points, nicely made:

You have the world’s attention at the moment. For the sake of all of us who live and breath Lotus Notes/Domino, please make full use of this brief and rare opportunity.

Out of a strong belief that Notes 8 is the most important release of Notes in the last decade this blog has frequently been a location where I can beg and plead anyone at IBM/Lotus to do more advertising and marketing to get that message out to new audiences. Yes, there have been a number of activities on that circulated around Notes 8 … but its not enough. And, what is out there doesn’t get to the right people. And when it does, it leaves them confused asking “what does an animal hybrid have to do with my company — or Lotus Notes?”

My point is that it is frustrating to believe so strongly in a product and have to frequently respond to questions like “is Lotus Notes still around?”

It is. And it has a great story to tell.

Well worth reading the rest of the letter… (via Simon)

Lotus Blogger 2008 Awards

Now this is a neat idea… Paul Mooney tells us:

Jess Stratton and Lotususergroup.org have setup the 2008 Lotus Blogger awards.

“The LotusUserGroup.org Blogger Awards recognize the importance of blogging in the Lotus world and celebrates the contribution of bloggers to the Lotus community.
Although we recognize that all bloggers provide a valuable contribution and an important service to the community, this award will go to the blogger who, over time, has provided exceptional information, education and community support through his or her blog in an entertaining (or engrossing) format and style.

Beginning on November 19, 2007 LotusUserGroup.org will start taking nominations for the award. Members of LotusUserGroup.org can use the form below to nominate their favorite blogger, who they feel best meets our qualifications, from among the hundreds of bloggers in our community. Nominations should be based on the qualifications in the paragraph above. Nominations will be open from November 19 – December 17, 2007 ”

Click here for details.  I know who I am voting for (and no… you cant vote for yourself!)

I think this is a wonderful way to celebrate the diversity, quality and value of the Lotus blogging community, and may well prove to be a super way to hear about a number of blogs that have somehow passed you by thusfar.  Nice one Lotususergroup.org…

Image:Redbooks: 0 results found

Redbooks: 0 results found

Ok, in the spirit of “good cop, bad cop”, I’ve done one positive Redbook post today, so here comes the chaser…

Try searching for “Quickr” or “Lotus Connections” on the Redbooks site…  What do you get?

Image:Redbooks: 0 results found

Yup, 0, zero, zip, nada, nil, null, nought….  Nothing found.

Despite the products being on sale since late June, so 5 months or so, there are no Redbooks, Redpapers, Residencies, Workshops or Technotes on the Redbooks site for two of IBM Lotus’s core offerings.  In fact, worse than the fact that there are no dedicated resources relating to these products, none of the other resources on that site include any references to them either.  So, that great Domino/Notes 8 Deployment Redbook that I flagged up a moment ago does not mention Quickr or Connections (i.e. no mentions of considerations to be given to upgrading Quickr/Domino servers, no thoughts about the Quickr or Activities sidebar plugins etc.).

IBM, I know that the discussion has already been had regarding the closure of the dedicated IBM Lotus Redbooks centre, and also that noone from IBM has commented on the 159 signatures on the petition, or even considered it necessary to actually make this decision formally known.  However, Ed did say that “we’ve done some 2008 budget planning that would include Lotus-related Redbooks”.  As we approach the end of of 2007, I would say that the hole left by the absence of Quickr or Connections redbooks is more noticeable than ever.
